Planting and establishment
About the first 2 to 3 monthsDisease-free suckers or tissue-culture plants and good drainage set the plantation up.
Vegetative growth
About 3 to 7 monthsThe plant builds leaves; the number of healthy leaves decides bunch size later.
Shooting and bunch
About 7 to 10 monthsThe bunch emerges and fills. Healthy leaves, water and potash matter most.

What to check first
- Use disease-free planting material.
- Look for yellowing that starts on older leaves and a split, discoloured stem, which point to wilt.
- Remove badly spotted leaves.
- Keep drainage good; banana hates standing water.

Panama wilt is a soil-borne fungal disease that blocks the plant's water vessels. It spreads through infected suckers, soil and water. Clean planting material and healthy soil are the best defence.
