Apple guide

Plant mortality, root rot, low production and poor quality.

Apple stage by stage

Apple growers in the hills face trees dying in the orchard, low production and poor fruit, while costs rise every year. Many of these problems start in the root zone and build up over seasons.

Main growing areas: Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

  1. Dormancy

    Winter

Pruning, orchard cleaning and soil work. Chilling hours decide how well buds break in spring.

  2. Bud break and flowering

    Spring

Even bud break and good pollination set the crop. Frost and poor pollination reduce fruit set.

  3. Fruit growth

    Summer

Fruit size, colour and firmness build up. Water, balanced nutrition and leaf health matter most.

  4. After harvest

    Autumn

The tree stores food for next year. Leaf health after harvest matters for next season's buds.

Common apple problems

Problems farmers bring to us

  • Trees dying in the orchard
  • Root rot and collar rot
  • Low production
  • Small, poorly coloured fruit
  • Rising input costs

What to check first

  • Dig near a weak tree and look at the roots: healthy roots are white and firm, rotting roots are brown and soft.
  • Check drainage: water standing around trunks invites root rot.
  • Look at the collar (where trunk meets soil) for cankers.
  • Test the soil for pH and organic carbon.

Apple questions

What causes root rot in apple trees?

Root rot is caused by soil fungi that thrive in wet, poorly drained soil. Weak trees, injuries and old orchard soil raise the risk. See our apple root rot guide.

Why are apple trees dying in my orchard?

Common causes are root and collar rot, waterlogging, borers and replant problems. Find the cause before you treat; an expert visit helps.
